AI Is Entering the Cockpit. But What Does That Mean for the Pilot?

Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly into aviation. But as technology becomes more capable, one question becomes increasingly important: what skills will tomorrow’s pilots need?

This week, aviation regulators, technology specialists and industry leaders are gathering in Cologne, Germany, for the EASA Artificial Intelligence Days 2026.

The two-day conference on 9–10 September is exploring some of the biggest questions surrounding AI in aviation — from AI assurance and human factors to ethics, advanced automation and human-AI cooperation.

It is a fascinating glimpse into where aviation may be heading.

But for pilots, it also raises another important question.

 

If aircraft become smarter, does pilot experience become less important?

We believe the opposite may be true.

Technology can provide information, process enormous amounts of data and increasingly assist with decision-making.

But aviation still operates in the real world.

Weather changes.

Conditions change.

Terrain changes.

Situations develop.

And pilots must understand what is happening around them, recognise when something does not look right and make appropriate decisions.

One of the most interesting aspects of EASA’s approach to artificial intelligence is its continued focus on the relationship between humans and technology.

The development of AI in aviation is not simply about replacing human involvement with automation.

It includes exploring how humans and increasingly capable systems can work together safely.

For the next generation of pilots, this could make judgement, situational awareness and understanding automated systems even more important.

The cockpit may change.

The responsibility to become a capable aviation professional does not.

For a developing helicopter pilot, every flight creates another opportunity to encounter something different.

A change in weather.

An unfamiliar route.

Different terrain.

A decision that needs to be made.

A situation that requires planning rather than simply following a routine.
